Refuse fire ravages 13 shacks

2013-11-06 00:00

A REFUSE fire, fanned by strong, hot winds, cost 13 families their homes at Jika Joe informal settlement yesterday.

Wiseman Ngcamu, a night security guard who was asleep in one of the shacks, told The Witness that he was awoken by the smell of smoke coming in his door, which he had left open as it was so hot.

“I only managed to save my uniform, cellphone and my foam mattress,” said Ngcamu.

Razak Yuseph, who saw the fire start, called the fire department, who responded quickly, saving other shacks from the ravages of the fire.

Bongani Mbhele, one of the shack owners, said they have been asking people not to burn rubbish next to their houses.

“I was not here when the fire started, but I was told that someone was burning refuse and the wind just blew it towards the shacks, and that is when the fire started,” said a furious Mbhele, who lost his belongings as a result of the fire.

Senior division operations officer Essack Khan said their quick response prevented the fire from spreading to other shacks. He said 13 shacks were damaged in total.
