Relatives confront media at créche owner hearing

2008-10-23 00:00

Relatives of Orient Heights resident Roshini Devi Hemraj (44) — who is charged with culpable homicide for allegedly driving a car into 10 children at her créche earlier this year, killing a baby girl — confronted journalists at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court where she appeared yesterday.

Hemraj’s trial has been postponed until February 25 next year.

Her husband Prakash told journalists in the foyer that he hopes they have “nightmares” and that “God will judge” them.

Later, an altercation ensued outside the court building when a photographer and a reporter waiting to photograph the accused were allegedly verbally abused by Prakash and another elderly relative, causing security guards to intervene and order them “not to argue” in front of the court.

During the fracas, members of the media were reportedly sworn at and a woman allegedly removed her shoe and threatened to put it in the mouth of a reporter.

The charge facing Hemraj arises from an incident when she allegedly drove her husband’s car into the group of children playing in the garage in her Brixham Road home on July 29. Nine-month-old Saiyona Moonsamy was killed.

Police said at the time that Hemraj apparently meant to reverse the car, but engaged the wrong gear and instead ploughed forward into the area where the children were playing.

Hemraj suffered from depression and had to be hospitalised for a time after the incident.
