Relay swimmer yet to be named

LONDON — The composition of South Africa’s 4x100 m London Olympics medley relay team has yet to be confirmed.

Swimming South Africa president Jace Naidoo confirmed yesterday that the identity of the freestyle leg swimmer was still undecided.

“Coach Graham Hill is still to decide on who will swim the freestyle leg,” Naidoo said.

Gideon Louw and Darian Townsend are favourites for the role, although Roland Schoeman, swimming in a SA record-equalling fourth Olympics, would be the sentimental favourite.

Although struggling in his 100 m heat, Charl Crous will be looking to get the team off to a flying start, while Olympic champion and world record holder Cameron van der Burgh and Chad le Clos are shoo-ins for the breaststroke and butterfly legs, respectively.

Heats for the medley start on Friday morning with the final on Saturday.
