Reliable: Duminy looks to upgrade

2012-09-26 00:00

IT’S fair to say that JP Duminy’s career is ticking over like the engine in a reliable family car.

Having made one of the great centuries in Proteas’ history in just his second Test and then fetching an eye-popping $950 000 (R7,7 million) in the second IPL auction, it’s also fair to say that he had a lot to live up to. Actually, far too much.

Now, however, he carries an air of authority with him when he walks to the crease.

There is a strong sense that he can be relied upon, and that he will not let anybody down.

He is not and never has been prone to making “big” or outlandish statements, and he’s certainly never taken anything for granted, but there is an undeniable sense that he wants — and expects — more from his game.

“I’m happy with where I am,” he said not entirely convincingly.

“The last two or three months have been pretty good.

“I would have liked some bigger performances but you’re not always going to get the chance to play the longer innings and to stamp your authority on a game, but the time will come.”

It didn’t help his cause batting at a lowly number seven during the Test series against England but, with “floating” middle order system preferred by coach Gary Kirsten, Duminy will get as many chances as anyone to bat up the order and produce the game-changing innings of which he is undoubtedly capable.

He may not wish to be compared to a flash sports car, but you certainly get the impression he’d like to trade the family car in for an upmarket 4x4.
