Relief as Madiba leaves hospital

2012-12-27 00:00

AFTER spending Christmas Day in hospital, former president Nelson Mandela was discharged last night, to the relief of the country.

This was confirmed by Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj, who told The Witness that the revered elder statesman would undergo home-based care at his home in Houghton until he fully recovered.

“We would like to thank the media and the public for the good wishes and for affording Madiba the necessary privacy,” Maharaj said.

Mandela had been in a Pretoria hospital for about three weeks after being diagnosed with a lung infection. He also underwent a procedure to have gall stones removed.

It was his longest stay in hospital since being released from prison almost 23 years ago. He spent Christmas in hospital, with his wife Graca Machel, his family, and President Jacob Zuma at his bedside.

A number of international news agencies tweeted about Mandela’s release from hospital, and the topic was soon trending on Twitter last night. Many expressed relief after hearing the news: @SpiritChanger85: Nelson Mandela left the hospital. God bless. I pray for his continued good health.
