2011-11-09 00:00

This year’s Remembrance Day will be unique as it falls on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 2011. SA Legion staff (from left) Lorna Arnold, Happy Dlamini and chairperson of the Pietermaritzburg branch of the SA Legion of Military Veterans, Quentin Gibson, watch Warrant Officer Jack Haskins from the Pietermaritzburg Dog Unit put Udain through his paces ahead of the Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday. Udain will be laying a wreath for all animals (especially sniffer dogs) that have fallen in the line of duty. Remembrance Day commemorations this year begin tomorrow with members of the SA Legion of Military Veterans laying poppies on the graves of servicemen and women at the three cemeteries in Pietermaritzburg. On Friday, November 11, several schools hold their own services at 11 am; including Maritzburg College, St Charles College and Hilton College, which members of the SA Legion of Military Veterans will attend. The day ends with a Moth Sunset Parade at 5.30 pm at the Moth Garden of Remembrance, Leinster Road. On Saturday, November 12 collectors will be out in force around the city to collect money for the SA Legion of Military Veterans. On Sunday, the Pietermaritzburg Civic Service will be held in the City Hall at 10.15 am, with the wreath laying at the Memorial Arch. This service will be attended by Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela and other dignitaries, who will lay wreaths to honour the fallen.
