Rent hike: Hospice shop closes

2011-08-30 00:00

THE Msunduzi Hospice Shop, which has traded at the Scottsville Mall for over 14 years, opened its doors for the last time on Saturday.

The shop has closed because of recently increased rent.

It sold donated secondhand items such as clothing, linen, collectables, jewellery, toys and bric-à-brac to raise money for patient care.

The Msunduzi Hospice Association provides a free service to their patients by providing physical, emotional and bereavement care to patients and their families and believes that all people should have the opportunity of dying with dignity.

Msunduzi Hospice Shop co-ordinator Betty Jordaan told The Witness: “Should we have been able to continue with our shop at the mall, we would have had to pay in excess of R32 000, almost double the rental we are currently paying.”

Hospice has moved all stock to their existing shop at 200 Zwartkop Road in Prestbury.

“Over the years we have had many satisfied customers who supported us and we hope and trust that they will continue to support us,” Jordaan said.

Scottsville Mall centre manager Lara Gracie said: “Unfortunately the landlord can no longer accommodate a tenant who has historically enjoyed the benefits of reduced rentals due to the nature of the business.”

The landlord, Redefine Properties, has embarked on a substantial upgrade of Scottsville Mall.

“It’s regretted that a symbolic, longstanding relationship between the mall and the Msunduzi Hospice Shop has ended … Regrettably the economic downturn has affected retailers and independent, smaller stores,” Gracie added.
