Rescuers pleased to see rescued pup full of life

WONDER puppy Titus, saved in a marathon seven-hour rescue a fortnight ago, yesterday had the chance to meet the men who saved his life.

Two weeks ago, the playful puppy slid into an underground drain in a Durban suburb and drew a team of specialist rescue technicians out of their beds to save him.

Leading a team of 15, including firefighters and road crews, RescueTech volunteers hacked at the earth in a frantic search for the pup. Yesterday the men who worked through the night paid a visit to the little guy.

RescueTech spokesperson Nick Holmes, who was part of the team reunited with Titus, said they rarely get to revisit the people they saved and it is the same with animals.

“It is impossible to describe the feeling you get when you save a life and we won’t forget how we felt that night when we pulled him out of the drain,” Holmes added.

His owner Sheritha Neelakandan said Titus had bounced back from his ordeal.

“For a few days after he was rescued, he was very lethargic and slow because he was dehydrated from being in the drain for so long.

“Now he is back to his old self — he is just a ball of energy and he is keeping us on our toes,” she said.

Durban and Coast SPCA spokesperson Caroline Smith said an inspection of the home was done last week. “Inspector Codie Fermin did a follow-up on the home and the dog was not chained up. The owners had covered up the area where the puppy fell through the hole,” she said.
