Resident’s anger over forensic unit delay

2010-10-28 00:00

A MAN who lives in Scottsville Extension has vented his frustration at what he calls “police incompetence” after waiting for hours without the forensic unit coming to collect fingerprints of two unknown suspects, who broke into his house on Tuesday.

Winston Khuzwayo said his neighbour had alerted the police when she suspected that two young men had broken into his house.

“I went to report this matter to the Alexandra Police Station. Even though police arrived at my house they could not help me because they claimed the forensic unit has to collect fingerprints before they could pursue further investigations,” said Khuzwayo.

He said police informed him that he must not touch anything that might tamper with the evidence. “I did as told, however, this happened on Tuesday and even today the forensic unit has not come to my house to collect the evidence,” he said.

Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said a case of housebreaking has been opened and is being investigated.

She said: “The behaviour of the officers that attended the scene is unacceptable and will be investigated by management.

“The process of lifting fingerprints is delicate and time consuming.

“The local record centre, which is commonly known as fingerprints office and based in Pietermaritzburg, is serving 37 stations. They travel extensively in the midlands because they receive about 30 cases a day,” said Jeevan.

According to Jeevan, whenever there is a call for the forensic unit an expert is dispatched to the scene as the calls are received via radio control.

She said in instances where visibility is not clear the scene is preserved until the next day.
