Residents call for humps after another crash

2014-05-27 00:00

A MAN allegedly lost control of his vehicle and smashed into a concrete wall in Newholmes, Northdale, yesterday morning.

Angry neighbours called for the Msunduzi Municipality to urgently build speed humps on Mars Crescent, saying accidents happened there regularly.

When The Witness went to the scene, footage of a speeding Toyota Corolla was shown to the reporter. In the footage, which coincidentally captured the crash on an iPad, the vehicle narrowly misses hitting three pedestrians after the driver failed to negotiate a bend before crashing into the concrete wall and destroying the electric gate at the home in the process.

Homeowner Suhana Ramiah, said, “We need speed humps because our children are not safe when they walk to school.”

She said fortunately her husband had already left the house to take the children to school when the incident happened.

“We have Regina and Suncrest primary schools nearby so that is why we have been calling for speed humps to be put up for more than seven years to ensure the safety of residents,” said Ramiah.

A neighbour, Rajan Pillay, echoed her call for speed humps, saying they even voted for the DA because they had promised to build speed humps last year but had not done so, to date.

Pillay said this was the second accident in their road this month, after a BMW crashed into a fire hydrant just down the road.

Attempts to get a comment from the Msunduzi Municipality were unsuccessful at the time of going to print.
