Residents fed up with gunmen

SOME residents of a Verulam suburb, tired of being tormented by gun wielding men, are planning to employ 24-hour security personnel that will patrol their area to safeguard the neighbourhood.

Businessperson Umash Harriter-fhad was robbed of his money on his 45th birthday on March 14.

He was driving out from his property with his employees when the armed men pounced. They locked him inside a small outbuilding room and tried to ransack the house.

They managed to take R800 and a chocolate that his brother had given him for his birthday.

They held his stepmother at gunpoint.

“They took my cellphone but they handed it back when they saw it was one of those cheap Nokia phones,” Harriterfhad said.

The thugs fled when family members who were upstairs started shouting.

The businessperson said his neighbours have suffered the same fate.

“A few of them have been robbed and that’s why we’re trying to come together,” he said.

Another resident, Vicky Chitra-dow’s air conditioner unit worth R24 000 was stolen on Sunday and sold at a nearby scrapyard for a mere R200.

Two months ago, Chitradow said the two robbers in a black vehicle shot at a pizza man who had come to make a delivery at his house.

He said his attorney’s house has also been ransacked recently.

Chitradow is concerned that the place is unsafe and now they fear for their lives.

The residents believes the thugs use a nearby bush as a hideout spot.
