Residents left in dark

IT’S not so much being plunged into darkness as power outages hit their suburbs that is frustrating Pietermaritzburg residents, but rather being kept in the dark when they call the municipality to try to find out the reasons for the electricity failures.

Once again, storms and rain left various parts of Pietermaritzburg’s suburbs in darkness this week following electricity outages. This has been an ongoing problem in the Msunduzi Municipality due to its ageing electricity infrastructure that has not been properly maintained for years, leaving it vulnerable to cold weather conditions because the electricity system gets overloaded and shuts down.

Power outages affected suburbs like Northdale, Lincoln Meade, Woodlands, Montrose, Hayfields, Townbush, Claridge, Hilton, Hardingsgate Farm, Bishopstowe and Sweetwaters.

The general complaint from those affected was being kept in the dark and not knowing when the power would be restored.

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma said a number of areas were affected by Tuesday’s storm.

Yesterday, Hilton and Sweetwaters were still without power.

“The one line feeding Hilton and Sweetwaters is off due to the crossing supporting the lines snapping. Repairs are underway and power should be restored in approximately three hours time,” he said.
