Residents march over lack of service delivery

MORE than 200 angry Bruntville residents on Friday marched to the provincial legislature to submit a memorandum on which “lack of service delivery” was the main concern.

Bruntville residents, under the jurisdiction of the Mpofana Municipality, cited a lack of proper sanitation, nepotism, corruption, an understaffed clinic, bad road infrastructure and high water tariffs as some of the problems they face.

They also called for councillors and municipal managers to step down. “We recall all the councillors and municipal managers at Mpofana. They have failed us,” said march leader Pastor Duma.

Duma said Friday’s march to the legislature was the fifth, following four directed at the municipality.

“Each time we march the municipality invites us to a discussion, but promises are not fulfilled,” Duma said. “We decided to bring this matter to the Speaker [Peggy Nkonyeni] of parliament.”

The Speaker was unavailable to receive the memorandum. Deputy chairperson of committees Happy Blose, who received the memorandum on her behalf, said: “Mpofane Municipality failed to address their problem. That’s why these people decided to come to us.”
