Residents order owner to leave land

2014-01-15 00:00

THE Muden community has ordered a landowner to vacate his land in the next two days — without any form of compensation.

The Hillerman community near Greytown marched to the Hillerman farm, commonly known as 194 Marina Beach farm, to order the landowner and farm manager to pack up and leave within the next two days.

Farm manager Martin Platt said yesterday the matter was serious and he was not prepared to comment over the phone. He invited The Witness to come for a full interview with him.

“We want him out of the area; we do not even want the government to give him any compensation. He should just go …” said community leader Jeffrey Ngobese.

Ngobese said he and 50 residents had gone to the farm to deliver the ultimatum. He accused the landowners of stifling development in the area, saying: “This area is lagging behind in service delivery because of him; every time the municipality puts up plans to install water or electricity, he blocks them.”

He said government had failed to resolve the matter and the community had therefore taken it upon itself to settle the matter by kicking the farmer out.

“It’s been more than 20 years and these land claims have not been settled.”

In a letter that Ngobese said was given to the police, it says the land owner has refused an offer by the government, through the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, a number of times and misled people that “we the community are not the labour tenants but instead we are outsiders”.

“This is our forefathers’ land. We only give you two days to move out all your belongings and leave our land with peace,” says the letter.

Police said they were unaware of the letter when approached for comment yesterday.
