Restrictions on school trips not a blanket ban, says MEC

2012-09-19 00:00

EDUCATION MEC Senzo Mchunu yesterday clarified confusion around the restriction on school trips, issued after a horror crash at Bergville at the weekend in which 10 schoolchildren were killed. The minibus taxi they were travelling in struck a cow on the R616 and plunged from a bridge into the Venterstroom River.

“The interpretation that as a department we have applied a blanket ban of all school trips could not be further from the truth — that is not our position,” the MEC said.

“Our position as a department is that we cannot sit back and fold arms while we are losing our learners in alarmingly high numbers.”

He said the ruling meant that every school that needed to embark on an excursion must get permission from the head of department and ensure that all safety regulations were strictly adhered to.

Said Mlungisi Maphumulo, principal of Indala High School in Richmond: “This is the right thing because schools are currently busy with exams now. Learners need to focus on their work.”

Deputy principal of Georgdale Primary in Hammarsdale Sipho Cele said, “It is about time this happened, because too many kids have been killed. It is the department’s responsibility to control this.”
