Revealed: PMB crop circle pranksters photographed in the act

2009-03-09 00:00

The mystery of who was behind a UFO hoax directed at Kitty Smith (77) — a paranormal enthusiast — has been solved.

It all started when Smith returned to her Hayfields home from church on February 28 to find very precise crop circles in her front lawn.

Smith, who has been studying and lecturing on unidentified flying objects for the past 54 years, said she knew straightaway that it was a hoax.

After questioning the “usual” suspects”, who outright denied having any part in it, she became concerned that strangers had trespassed on her property.

But Doug Smith (no relation) and Donne Townsend, both friends of Kitty Smith, were caught in the act by Ernest de Bruin who notified The Witness via e-mail yesterday.

De Bruin wrote: “I was walking past Mrs Smith’s house on the said day and saw these gentlemen cutting her grass.

“As I was trying my new camera out, I snapped these two gentlemen busy in the garden. I now know that after reading the article (on March 2), they were up to mischief.”

Townsend admitted he was guilty, adding he was also very proud to be a part of the prank.

“We did it because we wanted some light-hearted relief from all the miserable things happening every day, and planning and executing it was great fun,” he said.

Smith said the ingenious hoax did not upset her as she knew that there was no malicious or derisive intent. “I am quite used to sceptics, but I handle them alright as I am quite sure of my sources,” said Smith.

“They have enjoyed taking the mickey … but these pranks prove that they are showing too much interest in the subject.”
