Revenge killer gets life term plus 16 years for shooting

2011-04-11 00:00

A LIFE jail sentence plus 16 years was on Friday imposed on Derrick Bongani Dladla (32) of Msinga, convicted on Wednesday of a murder perpetrated in vengeance for his brother’s killing in Gauteng.

The victim, Bhekimpi Gasa, was shot nine times — mostly by an R5 machine gun — by Dladla’s gang, which also used other guns. He was shot as he opened the door of his house in January 2010.

The background to the case was that Dladla and two of his brothers believed that Mkhanyiseni Zondi, a nephew of victim Gasa, was responsible for the death of their brother Maqhinga Dladla.

The Dladlas decided to avenge Maqhinga’s murder and went to his home to shoot him, or anyone they could find.

Gasa happened to open the door and died in a hail of bullets.

Dladla did not testify in his defence.

Judge Mohoni Murugasen said that there were no substantial and compelling circumstances that enabled the court to deviate from the prescribed life sentence. The only mitigating factor for Dladla was that he was a first offender.

She imposed a 15-year sentence for the unlawful possession of the R5 and one year for ammunition, which will run concurrently with the life term. She refused Dladla leave to appeal against the conviction and sentences.
