Revved up: rolling thunder of 24 harley Davidsons thrills crowds at royal show arena

2009-06-01 00:00

WHEN you think of a Harley Davidson owner, you think of a big, burly man. But at the Harley Davidson display at the Royal Show, there were plenty of women to prove that they can hold their own amid the testosterone.

Road captain Gary Ponting said that about half the Harley Davidson riders are women, although only a few have their own bikes.

A number of the women get on the back of the motorcycle with another rider, but they are always there for the ride.”

The bikers at the show are members of the Harley Davidson Club of South Africa, which is said to be the oldest bike club in the world.

Ponting said that the club has more than 40 members in Pietermaritzburg, of which over half were present at the Royal Show display.

“We come here every year just to give the people a chance to see the bikes … we always get a good crowd reaction,” said Ponting.

The group of 24 bikers rode around the main arena and showed off the machines’ powerful engines.

“It is the reason why I love a Harley so much.

“Each one is unique and I love the sound of the engine,” said Ponting.

Two lucky women had the crowd in stitches with their impersonations of a Harley engine and earned the chance to ride on the bikes.

A young boy was also chosen from the crowd for a bike ride.

The bikers had the main arena packed with admirers who cheered them on as they circled the field.
