Rhino: Poachers flee rangers, leave rifle

2012-02-13 00:00

EZEMVELO field rangers managed to scare off two rhino poachers before they were able to remove the horns of a slain white rhino at Ndumo on Wednesday last week.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife said two rangers were on patrol when came across fresh spoor and simultaneously heard gunshots. They followed the sounds and intercepted the poachers, who fled the scene, leaving valuable evidence behind in the form of a .375 heavy calibre rifle and three rounds of ammunition. The horn of the rhino that had been shot, was still intact. The SAPS and National Prosecuting Authority are investigating the matter. No arrests have been made yet.

In another poaching case, EKZNW said the carcasses of two more white rhino were found at Noma West iMfolozi on Thursday.

They were found 300 metres apart from each other. The horns of one rhino were intact, while the horns of the other rhino were missing. This brings to six the total rhinos killed by poachers in KZN so far this year, which is 85,3% fewer than by the same time last year. — WR.
