Rhino and calf killed in iSimangaliso

2013-12-18 00:00

A WHITE rhino and her two-year-old calf have been found poached in the remote and inaccessible Tewate Wilderness section of iSimangaliso Wetland Park on the KZN North Coast.

Park CEO Andrew Zaloumis said there was no road access into this area and the discovery was made yesterday during a routine foot patrol by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers.

He said they had notified the SAPS and crime scene investigations were well underway.

“The adult female had both horns crudely hacked off, her ears had been removed along with skin and flesh from her back. The skull of her calf has been removed,” said Zaloumis.

He said this “cold-blooded murder is a most cruel and calculated assault on South Africa’s first World Heritage Site”.

He said anti-rhino poaching strategies in iSimangaliso are continually interrogated and improved.
