A WHITE rhino cow and calf fetched a record price of R560 000 at Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s annual game auction.

Rahman Devduth, head of the conservation organisation’s natural resources trade division, said yesterday that the average price of rhino sold was R224 000 a head.

This was up from last year’s average of less than R180 000.

“Plains game, such as impala, were cheap compared with last year,” Devduth said.

The auction, held on Friday at the Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom, brought in a total of R11 750 000.

A total of 40 white rhino went under the hammer — 24 of them having been on display in a boma at Mfolozi Game Reserve and the remainder having been displayed in catalogues.

Ezemvelo handed the Mduku community R960 000 that had been raised through a hunt on the Makhasa Community Game Reserve

The conservation body facilitated the hunt earlier this year.

Market stalls will be built at strategic sites visited by tourists when visiting the Makhasa Community Game Reserve, said reserve chairperson John Mathenjwa.

Ezemvelo said in a press statement: “The auction forms part of a bigger strategy that Ezemvelo uses to remove animals considered ‘excess surplus’.

“These animals are removed for ecological reasons to safeguard their habitat and are translocated throughout Southern Africa.”
