Rhino: sculpture raises funds for wardens

2013-02-28 00:00

THE fight against rhino poaching is R10 000 richer and Pietermaritzburg resident Denise Hampton is the proud owner of a limited edition bronze sculpture of a white rhino, thanks to sculptor Allen Hallett.

Hallett, a field ranger with the former Natal Parks Board in Umfolozi in the 1970s, donated the sculpture to be raffled, with the proceeds going to the East Coast Radio KZN Rhino Watch initiative, which raises money to keep a helicopter in the air over Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.

He said his job for four years was to take people on wilderness trails, where he had frequent encounters with rhinos. One such encounter provided the inspiration for the raffled sculpture.

The piece was on display for a number of weeks at the Pick n Pay Family Store in Howick, with the raffle taking place last week, raising R10 000.

Hampton, of Chase Valley, was the delighted winner. Coincidentally she had just returned from a trip to the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, where she had observed and pondered the fate of rhinos.

It has been a quiet week at the park, although an old skull was discovered in the past week, and a rhino was poached at Ndumo, further north, taking the total rhinos poached this year in KZN to 12.
