Rhino slaughter outrages DA

2008-10-03 00:00

The Democratic Alliance this week expressed outrage at the recent slaughter of rhino in the province, and will raise questions in Parliament about these and other countrywide poaching of rhino.

Margaret Ambler-Moore, KZN DA spokeswoman on conservation, said that while the board of KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife has “lurched from crisis to crisis, the biggest loser has been KZN’s unique biodiversity and natural landscapes”.

“The news that four rhino were killed during the last week by poachers is extremely distressing.

“It is strongly felt that Ezemvelo need to take immediate action to prevent further incidences.

Rhino poaching has not been a recent occurrence in KZN in recent years and the fact that 12 rhino have met this tragic end since the beginning of the year, suggests that swift action is needed.”

The problem is not confined to KZN. A reply to a DA Parliamentary question in the National Assembly revealed that between 2004 and 2007, 44 white rhino were killed by poachers in the Kruger National Park, she said.

“The DA will submit parliamentary questions to the MEC for Environment to determine what steps will be taken to apprehend these poachers and to ensure that similar acts of poaching do not occur again.”
