Rio carnival: Durban designer gets her big break

2011-03-02 00:00

FASHION designer Zanele Ncane of Umbilo in Durban is in Brazil to take part in and international fashion and entrepreneurship internship in the largest showcase of fashion art at the Rio de Janeiro Carnival.

The carnival festival attracts half a million foreign visitors every year.

The 21-year-old was a winner in the 16th annual Vukani Fashion Awards in 2010. The trip overseas is one of her highlight prizes for scooping the award for the “best collection” category last year. “This is my first trip overseas. I haven’t travelled abroad before, and so you can imagine how exciting the adventure is. It’s really an eye-opener to know how far one can push their creativity,” Ncane said.

While she is in Brazil, she will also get an opportunity to join a non-governmental organisation, Barriera do Vasco, to assist the samba schools in creating costumes for the biggest show on earth, working with established Brazilian designers Sol Azulay and Patrizia D’Angelo.

The programme was arranged by the DAD Fund, a non-profit organisation that strives to shape the future of young leaders.

“I really want to put my name out there and travel some more. There are no limitations to what one can do once you put your mind to it,” Ncane added.

Ncane completed a national diploma in fashion and textiles at the Durban University of Technology in 2009.
