2010-02-11 00:00

WITH supporters from both Hilton and Michaelhouse, the Sunfoil Schools Nite League match between these two independent schools was a festive occasion, although by the end it was the Michaelhouse boys who were cheering the most.

This was Michaelhouse’s last round-robin game, which sees them end on 4,5 points, whereas Hilton have one more game this afternoon against Glenwood. If Hilton beat Glenwood, then all four sides in Pool B will end on 4,5 points. If Glenwood win, then they will head the pool with Kearsney and Michaelhouse on 4,5 points.

Hilton elected to take first knock and after a solid start reached 101 for 4 in the 24th over, with James Groom making 49. Michael Good then struck and Hilton lost three wickets for the addition of only two runs.

A face-saving partnership of 52 between Jarryd Wernars (31) and Mark Burman (25) took Hilton to 158 for eight. Pieter Pelser helped knock over the tail and they were all out for 166 with two balls remaining.

Requiring just over four runs to the over, the pressure was off and Michaelhouse were able to bat without too much risk. The game was made safe by a third wicket partnership of 92 between Michael Watson (69*) and Hilton Mudariki (32) and although two quick wickets fell, Michaelhouse got home with five wickets in hand. They had planned the chase perfectly, getting home in the 37th over.

Scores in brief:

Hilton 166 (Groom 49, Matthews 27, Wernars 31, Burman 25, Pelser 3/24, Good 4/22)

Michaelhouse 167-5 (Watson 69*, Mudariki 32)

Michaelhouse won by 5 wkts.
