River racing season off to a chilly start

2012-07-20 00:00

The KZN river racing season for 2012-2013 gets off to a chilly start this weekend with the first race on the Upper Umgeni.

Hosted by Umzinyathi Canoe Club, the Share-List Property season starter will begin from the Albert Falls weir picnic site at 10 am on Sunday, an hour later than the usual 9 am starts, to try to avoid a little of the frost.

The course is the usual 16 km C Class section down to the Old Mill site on Truter’s Farm.

Umgeni Water have confirmed a flow of at least five cumecs for the race, very suitable for the mainly beginners field expected.

Although K1 entries are also very welcome, the race is being promoted as a K2 event ahead of the KZN K2 River Championships on the Tugela in Bergville next month.

There will be a Guppy race for the U12s starting at the Gum Trees at 11.30 am, and catering will be available at the finish.
