Road accidents: eight killed in KZN

EIGHT people were killed in road accidents around the province at the weekend.

Yesterday morning, five people died in a horrific accident when two vehicles collided at the intersection of Stanger Street and Somtseu Street in Durban central.

The three injured patients were treated on scene before being taken to hospital.

• A man died after being hit by a train between Park Rynie and Scottburgh on the South Coast.

• A woman was killed and six other people were injured when a bakkie and minibus collided in Cato Ridge on Saturday evening.

• A man was killed in an accident in Winklespruit when his car veered off the road, paramedics said on ­Saturday.

• Another man was killed after two motor vehicles rear-collided, resulting in a light delivery vehicle overturning and coming to a standstill on its roof in Sipophu. Four people were injured during the accident and were taken to hospital for further care.

• Over 30 people were injured when a tractor towing a trailer overturned on one of the narrow dirt roads between the sugar cane fields in Hibberdine yesterday morning.

The most seriously injured was a small baby, just over a year old, who sustained critical injuries.

She was treated by advanced life support paramedics and the Department of Health KZN air ambulance was requested to airlift the child to a hospital in Durban.

• In Pietermaritzburg, drivers of a minibus and a car were entrapped in their wrecked vehicles after they were involved in serious collision in Sweetwaters.
