Robber ‘became aroused’, raped woman aged 88

AFTER breaking into the home of an 88-year-old woman and robbing her on his way back from a tavern, an intruder said he became aroused, ordered her to undress and then raped her.

Mthokozisi Malishe (29) of Ezinqolweni near Port Shepstone pleaded guilty in the high court in Pietermaritzburg before Acting Judge S. Mngomezulu yesterday to housebreaking with intent to rob, robbery and raping the elderly victim on November 25 last year.

The case was postponed to Friday to allow the prosecution to obtain a victim impact statement from the rape survivor before sentencing.

In his statement to the court detailing his actions, Malishe said he had been drinking at a tavern in Ezinqolweni until after midnight on November 24 .

“I left the tavern … and I was on my way to the house I guard for the Mokoena family.

Along the way I passed the house of the complainant and I decided to rob her,” he said.

He said he entered the victim’s yard and kicked open the door leading to her bedroom.

On gaining entry he threatened to assault her unless she gave him money.

She handed him R180, he said.

“There was no light in the room so I used my cellphone to illuminate the room,” he said.

“I became aroused while I was in the complainant’s room and I ordered her to undress.”

Malishe said he forced the victim to lie on her back on her bed while he raped her.

He added in his statement that although he had been drinking that night, he was not drunk and his faculties were not impaired.
