A ROBBER was killed and three others seriously injured when quick-thinking police ambushed them just before they could rob a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet in Newlands west in Durban.

Police received a tip-off on Tuesday evening about a planned robbery at the outlet and waited for the suspects to appear.

Police spokesman Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the police were observing the area when they spotted the suspects in their getaway car.

“Our members saw the car approaching the outlet and tried to stop the suspects. The suspects fled,” he said.

Mdunge said the men abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

“While they were running, they opened fire on police.

“Our members returned fire, killing one suspect and injuring three others,” he said.

The dead suspect sustained gunshot wounds to the chest.

“The injured suspects are under police guard in hospital. They will appear in court once they are released…”
