Robber killed in complex

A dangerous armed robber high on the police’s wanted list was killed in a dramatic chase through a residential complex in central Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

The drama started at about 9.30 am at the College Road and Verbena Road intersection when police approached the 30-year-old man, wanted in connection with several armed robberies, including crimes in Greytown and Pinetown.

Witnesses said several gunshots were heard as the robber fled into the Strawberry Fields complex.

Kylie Naude, who watched the chase on a CCTV monitor in her kitchen, said she heard about five gunshots before she saw a man running. “I heard several gunshots and I went to the kitchen where I saw on the monitor a man was running down the road and behind him a vehicle stopped and another man jumped out and gave chase. Immediately after that I went outside to make sure the gate was locked.”

Other witnesses in the complex said after hearing gunshots they peeped outside and saw a man run into the back of the complex. “Unfortunately, the [electric] gate broke [on Thursday] evening and it was left open and that is how he gained entrance. The police guys were behind him and after he turned the corner, we heard gunshots again,” said one resident.

SAPS spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the police were acting on information.

“The wanted suspect was approached by the detectives who identified themselves as policemen.

He immediately fled into Verbena Road. The suspect continued running, and ran into the second entrance of the complex, jumping over a closed gate, followed by the detectives.”

Budhram said the man drew a gun when the police cornered him and fired at police, who shot back, fatally wounding him. A 9 mm pistol was recovered at the scene.
