Robber killed on top of victim

The policeman also shot dead the other hijacker.

“The guy was still on top of me and we were wrestling with his pistol against my throat. Then I heard shots fired and his body suddenly went limp, and fell next to me.”

That's how Elmarie Wypkema (41) described the final moments of her encounter with an armed robber and his accomplice who were trying to rob her of her luxury sports car in the parking area of a Johannesburg shopping centre.

The police reservist, who was at a nearby restaurant and saw the hijacking, jumped up and in a bloody gunbattle shot both the robber on top of Wypkema, as well as his friend who was already seated in her red Porsche Carrera.

Wypkema had stopped at the Fir Drive centre in Fairlands at around 1.30 pm yesterday to collect her daughter, Daniella.

Daniella was already in the car when two men appeared at the side window. According to a friend who was with Wypkema at the time, one of the robbers pulled Wypkema out of the car “and the two of them were rolling around, wrestling on the ground”.

The other robber, who had meanwhile climbed behind the wheel of the Porsche, ordered Daniella out of the car.

Marc Ishlove, the police reservist, saw what was happening and confronted the armed robbers.

Police said the robbers started firing when they saw Ishlove, who then returned fire.

“When I heard the shots I first thought, now I'm really going to die, but I didn't feel any pain.

That's when I realised that the guy on top of me had actually been shot,” Wypkema said.

She said she was “very glad” that Ishlove had happened to be at the shopping centre at that moment.

No-one else had been wounded in the shooting, and investigations continued.
