Robber turns out to be cop

2012-03-02 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG shop manager and his employees overpowered a would-be robber who has since been identified as a Nottingham Road policeman.

Selamu Ashuro was closing his Church Street supermarket on Wednesday night and was overseeing workmen who were fitting tiles when a man walked in and asked for airtime.

“I told him we were closed and did not have airtime, but he just pulled out a gun, cocked it and started to demand money.”

Ashuro said he tried not to panic and instead tried to buy time by getting the the man to follow him to the back of the shop.

“I told him that I don’t have money in the till, so I tried to point him to the back of the shop, where one of the workers distracted him and we were able to pull him down.

“He certainly looked like trouble when he came, but I wasn’t aware that he wanted to rob us.

“He cocked the gun three times, which made me lose my fear a bit because the gun sounded like it was empty. I think that if a gun is cocked many times, then that gun is empty.”

Ashuro said the police arrived shortly after one of the workers alerted them. No one was injured.

The man, who police confirmed was from Nottingham Road police station, was arrested and charged with attempted business robbery. He will appear in court today. His service pistol was confiscated.
