Robbers abduct traffic officers as they try to write out fine

MBOMBELA – Forget the Wild West, in South Africa, it is the east where criminals run rampant.

Armed robbers last week abducted two traffic officers while they were writing out a fine for a man who drove a BMW without his driver’s licence. It turns out the BMW was stolen and its occupants armed, presumably on their way to or from a robbery. Spokesperson for Mpumalanga’s department of community safety, security and liaison, Joseph Mabuza, said three traffic officers, Abraham Mashiyane, Thabo Mnguni and Ruitman Msisa, had stopped the BMW and another car on Thursday at noon on the R25 road past Verena northeast of Pretoria.

“One officer asked the driver of the BMW for his driver’s licence. The driver said he did not have one and the officer inspected the vehicle to check if it was roadworthy,” Mabuza said. He said as the traffic officer started writing out a fine, three armed men got out of the BMW and overpowered him. They forced Mashiyane and Msisa into the BMW at gunpoint and the driver drove off with them. He said Mnguni escaped and summoned help. Mashiyane and Msisa were later found unharmed in an open field near Bronkhorstspruit. Mabuza said the stolen BMW was found with one of the traffic officer’s ID cards inside.
