Robbers assault two elderly Hilton women

2009-07-06 00:00

HOUSE robbers pounced on two elderly Hilton women in the early hours of Saturday morning, demanding cash and ransacking the house looking for valuables.

Julia Braine (62) and Rosalind Posel (73) ran for their lives after four men assaulted them during the robbery.

Braine heard noises and when she woke up, four men — two of them brandishing knives — were standing beside her bed and shining a torch in her face in her house at Tanglewood farm off Dennis Shepstone Drive.

SAPS spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the robbers drew knives, grabbed Braine and dragged her out of bed. They demanded cash and firearms, but she told them she had none.

The men struck her in the face, Budhram said, “and dragged her out of the house where they continued to assault her”.

“A short while later, two of the suspects returned to the kitchen while the others remained with Braine.”

She escaped and ran to a neighbouring house on the premises, from where she called the police.

Rosalind Posel (73), who also lives in the house, was awoken by noises coming from the kitchen.

When she went to investigate, she found two men standing in the kitchen.

They demanded cash from, but she told them she had no money.

Budhram said Posel was also struck in the face.

The other two robbers re-entered the house and all four robbers ransacked the house.

Posel also managed to escape and ran to another part of the house, where she hid.

“The suspects took an LG television set, a VCR decoder, a tape recorder and a handbag, containing Braine’s personal documents, banking cards and cash to the value of R500,” Budhram said

Braine and Posel sustained injuries to their faces and were both taken to a private doctor for treatment.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that can assist with the investigation to telephone Detective Constable Thobani Nxele of SAPS Hilton detective services at 033 845 6525 or 072 108 1738.

Anonymous callers can contact Crime Stop toll-free at 08600 10111.
