Robbers caught red handed

2008-05-15 00:00

Three men were caught red handed and arrested at Alexandra Park on Wednesday morning while they were busy counting their loot of 26 cellphones, worth R50 000 in total, which they had stolen at gun- and knife-point from a city cellphone store a few minutes earlier.

Following a tip-off, Police Detective Project Team members arrested the three men who are aged between 26 and 34 years old and confiscated a 9 mm parrabellum firearm, eight live rounds in magazines and a knife, said police spokeswoman Joey Jeevan.

It is alleged that the three men entered the Vodalife Cell phone Store in Timber Street on Wednesday morning under the pretext of being customers.

But they suddenly held up the shop owner Danish Ayub (35) and forced him to hand over a box containing the cellphones, before fleeing from the scene.

A few minutes later, police started the search for the suspects and arrested them at Alexandra Park.

Jeevan said that the suspects will soon appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.
