Robbers hit Glenashley eatery

2014-05-20 00:00

ARMED robbers struck at a Glenashley eatery yesterday, holding up staff and the manager.

Police arrested one of the robbers and one is still on the run.

Sherwin Govender, an employee at Mamma Luciana’s restaurant at Glenmore Centre, Glenashley, said the thugs had parked their grey Toyota Corolla in a parking bay before approaching the restaurant.

“Two men got inside and forced staff to open the safe. They took some money and locked two staff members in the office and ran out,” said Govender.

The arrested suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Tyron Powell of Marshall security said CCTV footage from the restaurant showed one of the suspects walking up Mariana Avenue, not far from the crime scene.

“It’s not clear why he didn’t get into the getaway car. He’s quite a big guy and it took about six or seven reaction officers to apprehend him,” he said.

“He had cash and a loaded firearm. There was a bit of a scuffle in the process of apprehending him but in the end he lost.

“Some members suffered minor scratches from the scuffle,” added Powell.

He said the man must have been scared to used the gun as that would have drawn too much attention to him.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said a case of armed robbery is under investigation. He said the suspect, aged 37, will appear at Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.
