Robbers kill off-duty cop

A POLICEMAN was killed in Imbali on Sunday night when he tried to stop four knife-wielding suspects who stormed a neighbouring house, attacking its owner.

Another person was also injured during the incident.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said Constable Dumisami Majola was asleep at his girlfriend’s house when he was awakened by neighbours asking for his help.

“Constable Majola … rushed next door [where] four men armed with knives were attacking the owner of the house.”

Majola attempted to stop the men, but they lunged towards him.

“He immediately drew his firearm and fired two warning shots in the air. Two of the suspects continued to attack him and in the process he stepped back, lost his balance and fell to the ground.”

Budhram said as Majola fell, his firearm fell from his hand. One of the suspects grabbed the pistol and shot him, seriously wounding him.

“The suspect then fired randomly and another victim, identified as Leonard Matete, was shot. The suspects then fled from the scene, taking with them Constable Majola’s 9 mm Z88 service pistol.

Budhram said relatives rushed Majola to the Edendale Hospital, where he died during the early hours of the morning. Matete was treated and discharged.

A manhunt for the suspects was launched in the immediate vicinity, but the suspects are still at large.

Budhram said Majola was stationed at SAPS Richmond for the past five years and was a dedicated and loyal policeman, “loved by the community he served”.

Budhram said the SAPS condemns “this senseless killing of yet another dedicated policeman and calls on the community to provide any information that will assist in bringing these perpetrators to book”.
