AN off-duty police constable is fighting for his life after he was shot in the neck while making his way home from a tavern in Pietermaritzburg on Friday evening.

Constable Njabulo Mahlaba (31) of Mountain Rise police station was walking with his girlfriend from a tavern in Edendale when three men appeared from behind and shot him. The couple were on their way to the victim’s house in Smero, and they were attacked on the Msunduzi River bridge.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said Mahlaba is in a serious condition in hospital.

His firearm was found next to him.

“As they were walking, the men, who had been following them just opened fire on him without saying a word. After the shooting they ordered him to hand over the cash and cellphone. They also took his girlfriend’s phone,” said Jeevan.

She said the girlfriend ran back to the tavern to ask for help.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Captain Eugene Mkhize at 033 398 9722.
