Robbers target Marburg takeaway

2011-10-24 00:00

THE KFC outlet in Marburg was robbed late on Friday night after two gunmen held up staff and a security guard. They fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and are still at large.

Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the two staff members were cashing up after close of business.

“The two gunmen entered the KFC and threatened the security guard with a knife. They then held up the two staff in the store at gunpoint, demanded cash from the till and fled.”

No one was injured in the robbery and the investigations continue.

Wiid said there is a trend for business robberies to increase during this time of the year.

“Business generally picks up as we head towards the festive season and companies start to have their year-end parties.

“We want to caution business owners to be extra vigilant at all times. They should not keep large amounts of cash on the premises.”

Wiid also warned business owners to be careful when they are banking money.

Last week The Witness reported that a Chinese businessman, Shenghui Zhang, was robbed near the CBD while on his way to deposit money. The police managed to outrun the suspect and recover his money.

“Businesses must not stick to a routine when banking money. They should change their days and times. If they are carrying large amounts of money they should not go to the bank unaccompanied,” Wiid said. “They must always be aware of what is happening in the vicinity of their business. If they notice suspicious-looking people loitering around, they must inform the police.”
