Robbers use pepper spray

2008-12-23 00:00

Two criminals who attacked a Scottsville resident on Monday night were not only armed with a firearm, but also wielded pepper spray, which they sprayed in their victim’s flat before locking him inside.

The two men, who robbed the 21-year-old man of his cell- phone and money, disappeared with the key to his flat at King Edward Mansions at about 8.30 pm.

The victim, who asked to remain anonymous as he fears for his life, was left in agony as the spray burnt his eyes and throat.

“I had to jump out of the flat through a [small] bathroom window. I don’t know what would have happened to me if all the windows had burglar guards.”

The man, who shares the flat at the corner of King Edward Road and Alan Paton Avenue with his girlfriend, had just returned from visiting friends. As he was opening the main gate of the building two men came from behind and threatened him with a firearm.

The robbers forced him into his flat where they made him give them his Samsung E370 cellphone and cash.

“They then sprayed the pepper spray all over the flat before locking me inside.”

His girlfriend, who had no key, arrived from work after 9 pm to find him waiting in shock outside. They reported the matter to the Alexandra police station. In the morning they changed the locks.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said police are appealing to anyone with information to contact Detective Sergeant Ernest Nxumalo at 033 845 7707 or 082 544 9850, or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
