A HILTON couple were left shaken after two men broke into their house early on Friday morning and attacked them using pepper spray.
Said the husband: “I suspect they’d been inside the premises for about an hour and scouted the place out.”
He told The Witness he was afraid that if he identified himself it could affect the value of his property.
He said he suspected the assailants had come through the gate after his daughter had left to visit some friends.
“I’m sure they’ve figured out that you can manipulate the gate by blocking the laser beam to keep it open.”
He said they were awoken by a loud bang coming from the front of the house when they were asleep.
“When I went to investigate I found that the door had been kicked in. They were shocked to see us, and they soon fled,” said the man.
“As we were calling the police they came back and sprayed pepper spray at us, fleeing afterwards.”
He said the pepper spray affected their eyes and got in their lungs.
“We had difficulty in breathing for about 10 hours afterwards,” he said.
They took a television set, a laptop and a cellphone.
“Those are all things that can be easily replaced, but it can be a nuisance. We are still a bit shaken by what’s happened. We can still smell the pepper spray in the house. It’s not a nice thing when someone invades your property.
“Thankfully it was just me and my wife at home.
“We will now be jacking up the security in our home. That’s got to be the first thing you look at.
He said he had been pleased with the response of the police.
“They were there within 10 minutes, and they were very helpful. I was very impressed with the work of the police,” he added.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan confirmed the incident, and said police were investigating a case of house robbery.
