Robbery: Guard shot in neck

2008-07-28 00:00

A security guard was seriously wounded during a robbery at a Hillcrest shopping complex yesterday.

Hillcrest police spokesman Sbu Sithole said five men entered the Bluff Meat Supply butchery in Inanda Road and held up the cashier at gunpoint.

“The security guard saw this and tried to help. However, he was shot in the neck. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene,” he said.

Sithole said the men drove into Molweni where they abandoned the car and escaped on foot.

“Police gave chase and were directed to kwaNogxaza, where a shootout between police and the suspects occurred,” he said.

One of the robbers was shot in the head and critically injured. He is in hospital under police guard.

Three others were also arrested, while one fled.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said the butchery’s guard sustained a bullet wound to the neck.

The Organised Crime Unit is investigating cases of attempted murder and armed robbery.
