Robbery: man thrown off balcony

2010-04-22 00:00

A DURBAN gardener was thrown from a six-metre-high balcony by a gang of armed robbers yesterday.

The 26-year-old man, whose name has not been released by the police, is believed to have been working in a garden in Westville when five suspects stormed into the house and demanded money and jewellery.

Once they had taken a computer tower, cellphones and a safe, the men forced the victim on to a balcony, from where he fell six metres to the ground. According to a source, the gardener tried to alert the people inside the house, but the attackers warned him to remain quiet.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the police have launched a manhunt for the attackers.

After the attackers fled, the people in the house called the paramedics. ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the victim sustained a serious fracture to his leg and possible neck and back injuries.

He is in a stable condition at a local hospital.
