Robbery: pension money stolen

2011-10-05 00:00

ARMED men made off with an undisclosed amount of money from a Durban pension pay-point yesterday at about 11 am.

As pensioners queued at the Newlands East community hall, five men, one armed with a handgun, disarmed a security guard of his shotgun and robbed the officials of the pension money.

No gunshots were fired.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the robbers escaped in a silver grey VW Polo.

South African Social Security Agency spokesperson Mbizeni Mdlalose said the organisation will try its level best to improve security at pay points.

The agency administers government grants.
