2012-09-28 00:00

TWO robbers, members of a gang of five, have been sentenced to a total of 180 years behind bars by the high court in Scottburgh, police said.

While one of their gang with whom they robbed shops — from Port Shepstone on the South Coast to Hluhluwe in Zululand — turned state witness, two died from natural causes.

In the dock were Funokwakhe Jama (38) and Khayelihle Nxele (26).

The court found Jama guilty of 12 counts of robbery and sentenced him to 10 years for each. He will serve at least 30 years in jail.

Nxele, found guilty of six counts of robbery, was also sentenced to 10 years for each. He will serve a minimum of 20 years’ imprisonment.

They conducted their spree in August 2010, hitting shops in Isipingo, KwaDukuza, Scottburgh, Richmond and Pietermaritzburg.

“Through intensive investigation by Port Shepstone Organised Crime unit, five suspects were arrested and charged for robbery with aggravating circumstances,” said police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane.
