Rocks to go: Local team off to Dubai for project

2008-09-03 00:00

LOCAL artist Siyabonga Sikosana, who has been a regular top seller at the city’s annual outdoor art show, Art in the Park, and had a solo exhibition of his vibrant scenes of township life at the Tatham Art Gallery in 2004, is off to Dubai on Saturday, wearing his other artistic hat: as a creator of artificial rocks for water features.

A team of six people from Rock-It, including Sikosana and the company’s owner, Guy Haines, are going to Dubai to work on a three-week pilot project. Contractors Murray & Roberts are working on a contract in the Gulf state that will involve three-and-a-half kilometres of waterfalls and waterways using artificial rocks.

After the initial visit, there are likely to be many more for the Rock-It team before the project is completed.

Sikosana studied textile design at Tech in Durban, and was subsequently trained by Haines at Rock-It when the company was working on Ushaka Marine World. He now carves and paints the “rocks”, giving them natural-looking cracks and marks after Haines has designed them.

It may seem a far cry from his other work, painting from life in and around Pietermaritzburg, but it is now giving him an opportunity to travel.
