Rocky Horror is back

2008-07-10 00:00

IT’S coming back — the world’s most famous rock ’n roll musical, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, returns to the Barnyard Theatre at Gateway from July 15 to August 24.

The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of the misadventures of Brad Majors and his fiancée Janet Weiss, two hapless virgins from Denton, who lose their way on a dark and stormy night.

On the way to visit an old college professor, they run into tyre trouble and seek help from the Frankenstein place where Dr Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite from the planet Transexual in the galaxy of Transylvania, is in the midst of one of his maniacal experiments.

Frank has created the perfect man, a rippling piece of beefcake christened Rocky Horror and intends to put him to good use (his own). The kinky household retinue is presided over by a hunchback henchman Riff Raff and his incestuous sister Magenta, assisted by a tap-dancing groupie-in-residence, Columbia.

The 2008 production of The Rocky Horror Show for The Barnyard Theatres is co-directed by Bronwyn Evans and Matthew Stewardson. The cult show enjoyed sold-out runs at the Gateway venue in 2002 and again in 2004 when it did a national tour on The Barnyard circuit.

The Rocky Horror Show features the hit songs Time Warp, Hot Patootie, Damn it Janet and Sweet Transvestite, and was made into the hit movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The role of Frank-N-Furter will be taken by Charles Bouguenon, with Bruce Little as Riff Raff, Bronwyn Evans as Columbia and Catherine Hopkins as Magenta. Dane Paarman will play Brad, with Estelle Kriek as Janet, local boy Jerryn Fosteras as Eddie, Roger Grant as Dr Scott, and Llewllyn Cordier as Rocky.

The show will again be narrated by Rocky stalwart David Sherwood, and the Phantoms will be played by Dolly Louw, Durbanite Donnagh Roberts, and Christopher Dudgeon. So get into party paraphernalia or your Rocky get-up (to become the final cast member in this hit show).

Tickets are R130 per person from Wednesday to Saturday, with discounted specials of R90 per person every Tuesday night and Sunday matinee show.
