Ronnie Davel Memorial: strong competition for defending champ Khumalo

2011-01-07 00:00

LOCAL racing commences on Sunday with the annual Ronnie Davel memorial from Laddsworth School in Hilton.

This is a combination of road and track running through the Mondi forests outside Hilton and offers both a challenging and scenic course about 16 km long.

The route can change year to year due to the logging activities of the forest, but is normally run through the early morning mist which adds to the atmosphere.

Last year’s winner, Prodigal Khumalo, is set to defend his title but can expect strong competition from Bongmusa Mthembu who earned third place in the 2010 Comrades and is particularly strong over hilly courses.

Local hero Shaun Mieklejohn has committed to the race and should be amongst the podium places in the age-group awards.

Runners will gain additional motivation as they are ushered through halfway by the skirl of bagpipes.

This is the 33rd running of the race which this year is sponsored by Moffat Optical and Morris Material Handling. This has ensured not only the usual prizes to top performers but also a light breakfast and goodie bag to all finishers and a wide selection of quality luck draw prizes.

The race is open to runners and walkers and temporary licences will be available to non-club runners for R20 at the start.

Runners should remember that the 2010 licence numbers are valid for this and all races through to January 31.

The 16 km race commences at 7 am with a five kilometres fun run at 7.05 am. Entries are taken tomorrow from 2 pm to 5 pm and race morning from 5.30 am.
