Rounding off the last week

2010-06-03 00:00

THERE is one week to go before the Fifa World Cup kicks off with the historic game between hosts South Africa and Mexico at Soccer City in Johannesburg.

The final squads have all been named and teams will be filtering into the country almost every day from now up until June 11 as they settle at their base camps and training venues in preparation for the event.

Pre-tournament international friendlies are set to form a crucial part of the preparations for many of the sides in this final week as they attempt to find a combative on-field formula.

South Africa will have a serious test of their ability when they take on Denmark this Saturday in what promises to be the toughest of the side’s pre-tournament friendlies. The game will be played at the newly renamed Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, and will be screened at 3.30 pm on SABC 1.

There are two international friendlies today, featuring champions Italy and tournament favourites Spain.

Woza Lunchtime (SuperSport 3, noon) — Player interviews and an entertaining look at the build-up from a star-studded presenter line-up including Elana Afrika and Bobby Skinstad.

Soccer 411 (SABC 1, 10 pm) — This interactive show focuses on every aspect of soccer, from match analysis to audience participation.

International Friendly: Spain vs South Korea (SuperSport 3,t 4.30 pm) – These two countries will play in Austria.

International friendly: Italy vs Mexico (SuperSport 3, 7.30 pm) – The defending champions have had very little match practice coming into this game and the focus will be on coach Marcello Lippi’s squad selection.
