Rovers and Collegians get byes

DURBAN’S premier rugby clubs College Rovers and Durban Collegians can thank the luck of the draw for gifting them another week to prepare for the 2015 Community Cup.

The national club rugby competition starts on February 21 next year but both Durban sides have byes in the opening round.

Rovers and Collegians will start their campaigns the following week on February 28.

It is the first time that Collegians will battle it out in the Community Cup, which was formerly known as the Club Champs. The Red and Black machine secured their spot after winning the 2014 Moor Cup league.

Former Club Champs winners Rovers have competed in the Community Cup in the past two years and bowed out in the semi-finals this year, losing 32-13 to Rustenberg Impala. Rovers retained their spot in the Community Cup after beating Upington in a qualifying match in September.

Rovers and Collegians will play at home in their first match of the pool stages. There are plans for both games to become a double header to be played at Collegians’ home ground. The hosts are set to play Welkom Rovers first up, while Rovers will take on Noordelikes.

Rovers then face a tough task in the second round of the competition with a trip to the capital to play Pretoria Police. Rovers broke Police’s hearts back in the 2012 final of the Club Champs. Collegians have a second round date with Wesbank.

The third round will likely see Rovers host a double header when they take on Bloemfontein Crusaders, while Collegians will play Shumbe Ferros.
